Without Systems, a business is skating on thin ice…

This week has been a learning experience, and a wake up call.

I caught the flu over the weekend. And it came with all the fun accessories – fever, sore throat, body aches… Today is the first day I really felt OK walking around the house. My throat is still sore, and I can’t talk without coughing. But, overall I’m feeling much better.

Fortunately I had some blog posts pre-written, and just scheduled them to go in Wordpress. However I didn’t have enough in place to ride it out, and ended up writing a few to fill the gap.

This has made me realize how vulnerable my business is, and how it cannot run on autopilot for any length of time.James Brausch talks about systems all the time. He says you cannot have true freedom from your business without systems in place.  To prove his point he asked people to answer 4 questions about their business in his post titled Systems.

They were:

1. I have a business system in place/I do not have a business system in place.

2. I outsource at least 400 hours of work to employees, interns, contractors or vendors every week/I do not outsource or outsource less than 400 hours of work every week.

3. I am happy with the growth rate of my company/I am not happy with the growth rate of my company.

4. I am free and could walk away from my company today/I am not yet free because I still have a J.O.B. or I still work in my own business.

5. My business is profitable/My business is not yet profitable.

As I looked over the questions, my answers confirmed what I had already realized. My business is solely dependent on my production. No work from me, no business. That’s not a good position to be in.

The mistake I’ve been making was waiting to outsource tasks. Actually I don’t have a plan in place to outsource tasks, and it kept getting pushed off into the future.

It’s time to get systems put in place for this Internet business. Otherwise it will never grow beyond my ability to produce, and put a cap on income.

Are you wondering how to put systems in your business? Well, James Brausch gives a simple formula in this post Systems Means Freedom. I have several of his products, and they are great. Check it out.
