Why I’m not upgrading to WordPress 2.5…

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock you’ve heard that the upgrade to 2.5 has arrived.  Many people have blogged about its wonders and how wonderful the new version really is.

I’ve read the posts, watched the videos and agree it looks great.  And normally I’m what you’d call an early adopter in marketing circles… but I’m holding off on upgrading.

An early adopter is someone who is the first to jump on new products.  They like to be one of the first to try out something, and usually finds it fun.  Personally I like trying out new stuff, and like to see how people solve problems in creative ways.  But this time I’m taking a pass on the early adopter program.

With most new software upgrades there are bugs to be worked out.  And you will see that people have problems, hiccups and flat out explosions.  Bugs are common with software it just a fact of life.

There are plenty of folks out there who have upgraded already, and I’m waiting to see what happens to them.  Let them be the guinea pigs, and work out the bugs.  I know that sounds callused, but this time I’m standing back and observe the festivities.

Having this site crash over some weird exception is something I don’t want to deal with at this time.  It can be a real pain to fixing things, or worse recovering the whole thing.  I know this sounds paranoid, but I don’t care.  Let others work out any bugs that might pop up.

Who knows maybe 2.5 will be one of the exceptions, but I’m not willing to take the chance.  I’ll wait for an update, or when I see people reporting no problems.

  1. It is definitely wise to wait as there will be many bugs to work out. I have installed v2.5 on a non critical website and it looks nice. What I really like is the ease of installing updated plugins.

It also doesn’t help that Semiologic hasn’t released their beefed up version of 2.5

Always good info on your blog, Thanks.

  2. I shall wait as well, perhaps until 3.0 lol. I’ve heard horror stories galore about very few plugins working…..plugins are very important to this blogger.

  3. Don’t upgrade! There are so many things that don’t work on their new version that you have to wonder why in the hell they put it out there for people to upgrade to! Hyperlinks don’t work! I’m not joking, it does not work. Tons of ppl have no clue how to put in a hyperlink and they will be really mad. Luckily I do know how. I went to their forum and left them a nice remark on how stupid it was to do this.

  4. I guess I’m the lone wolf here. I upgraded earlier this week and so far (keeping my fingers crossed) I’ve experienced no adverse effects. I can certainly understand the hesitancy to upgrade but for me, so far, so good.

  5. I agree with Sam on this. When I go to set up 2.5 I will set it up on a non-critical blog. Even doing that I will still back up the blog before I update.

  6. After grabbing Vista fresh off the shelf, I’m waiting for a bit on this one. I can’t take any more stress just yet.

  7. I have upgraded all my blogs with v2.5 and I have not had any problems. The issue with the plugins this that some people forget to disable them before upgrading. The only real change for me is the Admin interface and its clean and better to navigate around. Its well worth it for me.

  8. Keith,

I have upgraded personally, and no problems, actually the interface is much improved.

    I recommend you upgrade.

  9. I do like the admin dashboard, but some plugins I was using do not work with 2.5 . . . including Most Popular.

  10. Colin - Yeah I learned the disable the plugin thing when I upgraded another blog last year.

Joseph - From the screen shots I’ve seen, and the reviews I’ve read the interface looks great. And when I do upgrade it will first be on a another blog. I will test it somewhere else first.

I’m glad to see people are happy with this version so far.

  11. I suppose it’s a disable/enable issue sometimes with the plugins, but after seeing list after list of all in incompatibility issues with many plugins, I’ll wait. There really are some I refuse to do without. :)
