Sometimes Comment Spam Is Entertaining…

I have to say right up front… comment spam SUCKS!

I receive so much of it that I just went ahead & set this blog to moderation of every post. This makes it a pain for everyone. Because people don’t get to see their comments right away, and I have to moderate every comment. But, if I didn’t this blog would quickly disintegrate into a rolling male enhancement affiliate program. VIVA VIAGR... never mind.

I won’t go so far as to eliminate comments because I like the interaction with everyone. It’s nice feedback on what I’ve written. Plus, it’s fun to see what some people come up with.

Every once in awhile a spam comment lands in moderation that makes me laugh…

One that was hitting here a couple of months ago would go along these lines:

At first I didn’t agree with you, but at the end it really made sense.

Oh, by the way, check this out. I believe it will clarify what you are trying to say – (A link to some inappropriate site)

No brainer… Delete!

This next one falls under the category – Did You Really Read My Blog?!?

found your blog from a partner’s site and I have to say that I really like it. I was wondering if we could exchange links on your blogroll…

Slight problem… I don’t have a blog roll. Now what are we going to do?!?

Then there was this gem…

Great post. I completely agree, it seems there is one launch after another. You really need to pick and choose where you spend your time…

OK, you are thinking… what’s so bad about this comment?

Nothing, until you see the link to website is an affiliate link to the product being mentioned in the blog post. Thanks for including an affiliate link… because I’m here to let you siphon traffic off – SO, YOU CAN MAKE MONEY!

I guess if you throw enough of these against the wall… something will stick.

  1. Hi Keith,

Let me leave you a legit comment. I’m just browsing around to my Twitter friends sites to see what’s happening. Saw your Tweet that you had a new post and stopped by for a peek.

I know how you feel about comment spam. We all get our share but it sure is nice to get comments from folks who are really reading our stuff.

Keep up the good work. I’ll check back soon.

  2. Hey Keith, it sounds like you’re self moderating for auto-generated link type spam, do you have Akismet?

I have my admin set to a few things, with no real problems…

All commenter’s get moderated for their 1st comment.

2 or more links in a comment get spammed – this handles ALL porn/viagra, etc.

All comments come through my email, which is checked regularly….even if one happens to slip by, it’s not for long ;)

  3. Hey Dennis,
Yeah I’ve used Akismet. The one thing I don’t like about Akismet is it will occasionally put a legitimate comment into the spam queue. It’s a small thing considering all the junk it catches.
Yep, I realized these were coming from bots, because two have shown up multiple times. I just found them entertaining… :)
Back in August I started writing about a subject, which tends to trigger comments I knew would have links I don’t want to promote… In any way… even for a short period of time. These comments have all but vanished, and I’ll eventually switch back.

  4. Keith -

I use Akismet, and I have the same problem: occasionally, a legitimate comment will be put in the spam queue.

I also use MyBlogLog to track stats on my blogs. I think it’s $25 for a year’s worth of stats per blog.

Anyway, it tracks all outbound links from your blog. It also tracks when people click the “Submit Comment” button.

When I check my blog stats and see that the comment button has been clicked, then I know that comment should either be in the Moderation or Spam queue.

If I don’t find it in Moderation, I glance for it in the Spam queue.

Ultimately, I only end up having to check the Spam queue a couple times a month.

Again, not ideal, but that’s how I’ve solved the problem of legitimate comments that go missing.

  5. Good to hear, and yea the occasional slip up is no big deal. :)

  6. well at first I did not agree with your post but by the end.. lol just kidding :)

I get a ton of comment post like this myself and it is annoying. But some of them just make you roll your eyes and laugh. I have only been blogging myself for a bit over a month and love it so far.
I have tried a few of those mods word press offers free from other developers and it blocks some but not all the spam coming in.
What kills me is if these people actully spent then 5 min to read your post and comment about it thats already one very good link back to their blog.

  7. Hi Keith … my newest twitter friend ;)

I too get a lot of very entertaining comments and I laugh even harder when they post this type of thing on the post where I address HOW to leave proper blog comments. LOL

Sean … I agree somewhat but I also check the links to see what kind of site I’m sending my readers to and if they’re linking to an “off” site I wouldn’t approve the comment … even if they cleaned it up.

I look forward to following your posts. *SmiLes* Suzanne

  8. I can not help but laugh, because I get the same trash on my blogs! It would be great if there was a plugin that would just delete it completely when we specify exact text instead of putting it in the spam box. I have to check my spam box because some good comments are filtered out, but when you have to filter through 00’s a damn it is very time consuming.

  9. hi Keith (I followed from your twitter DM) , yep, we all get heaps of comment spam, and the worst thing is when the ones saying ‘good work webmaster’ get approved by the person you’ve built a blog for, and then they wonder why they’re being blasted.

never mind, it’s all good fun.

Loved the one with the affil link ha ha that’s awesome.
